Changes in flight plan are distressing and costly

16.03.2010

From 15 March, Seesam offers you the opportunity to purchase insurance against changes in your flight plan and any accompanying related costs that take place before the beginning of your trip.

The situation where flight tickets are purchased from several different flight companies to travel to the desired point of destination, and in as inexpensive a manner as possible, is rather commonplace. Kaie Heido, the Personal Insurance Product Manager at Seesam International Insurance Company Ltd., clarifies the reasons behind the need for supplementary insurance: “Transferring flight tickets has, indeed, the most devastating effect on people’s wallets, because the postponement of one flight could mean that other flight tickets will consequently become useless”.

“In such cases, people have two options: one is to purchase new tickets to replace the first ones, which could, at the same time, be significantly more expensive than the initial tickets. The other option is to give up the flight. In such cases, people will be refunded the money paid for the tickets purchased from the flight company that has changed its flight plan, but the travellers will still have to bear other related costs.”

A popular recommendation in travelling forums is to buy insurance against travel problems, which should resolve such inconveniences. At the same time, standard travel insurance does not cover changes in a flight plan that take place before going on a trip. The supplementary insurance against travel problems helps to resolve the situation by covering additional expenditures deriving from changes in the flight plan – by replacing the tickets or compensating for the tickets or costs for additional overnight accommodation that have arisen due to flight plan changes. Another advantage of supplementary insurance is that in the event that the trip is interrupted within the first 24 hours, the insurance company will compensate for the costs of the whole cancelled trip.

Heido asks people to pay attention to the fact that supplementary insurance will protect travellers only if the insurance policy has been purchased on the same day or even earlier than the flight tickets. This will ensure that the insurance policy is valid and important preparations for the trip are not done at the last minute.
