I have a health insurance card. Why should I buy travel insurance to travel in the European Union?
Persons temporary staying in another Member State, insured in the Estonian Health Insurance Fund can receive medical assistance on terms and conditions equal to those of the insured persons residing abroad. The Health Insurance Fund compensates the expenses related to a direct health service, but the additional costs have to be covered by the client himself or herself. Various costs of emergency assistance are also not indemnified in a foreign state. Below you can see an example of medical costs in two Member States of the European Union.Finland:
- visit fee: 22 euros
- hospital bed fee: 22 euros per day
- transportation of the patient: 100%
- medical assistance: 10 euros
- dental care: 10 euros
- medicinal products and bandages: 10% of the costs (5-10 euros)
- health services: 10% of the costs + 10 euros per referral
- hospital bed fee: 10 euros per day (up to 28 days per calendar year)
- auxiliary equipment: 10% of the costs to be indemnified by the Health Insurance Fund.
