Prevention of damages at home

Every homeowner can do a lot to protect and take better care of their home and property. To this end, we have compiled a list of advice below.

Prevention of fire emergencies

  • Each home must be equipped with a functioning smoke detector.
  • Each home should be equipped with primary means for limiting a fire – a fire blanket and powder extinguisher.
  • Do not perform electrical work on your own, call a qualified specialist.
  • The chimney and flues of a stove-heated apartment or house must be cleaned at least once a year before the heating period begins. Fire chambers or the base of the chimney may have no cracks. If necessary, have these repaired by an expert.
  • There must be a metal sheet or non-combustible flooring in front of the fire chamber to prevent embers from causing a fire.
  • Do not leave burning candles or a fireplace unattended. Place candles on a non-combustible surface, away from flammable materials.
  • Keep matches or burning candles out of the reach of children.
  • Disconnect household appliances (e.g. the iron) from the power supply after use.
  • Never use an open flame to thaw frozen pipes.
  • Never try to extinguish burning fat or oil with water. The fire must be smothered using a cloth or special fire blanket.

Prevention of water emergencies

  • Have a specialist regularly inspect whether the water pipeline, hot water boilers and household appliances (e.g. the washing machine, dishwasher) are in good condition.
  • Regularly clean waste pipes and traps to prevent blockages from occurring.
  • Before the winter begins, drain the pipes located outdoors and in non-heated rooms of water and close their valves to prevent frozen pipes from bursting.
  • Household appliances must be connected to the water supply through the tap that has been prescribed to this end and can be turned off when the appliance is not used.
  • When leaving home, do not leave the washing machine running.
  • In humid rooms, have a moisture barrier installed behind the wall material and under the flooring.
  • If there is no dwelling on the basement storey, items stored on the basement storey must be placed at a height of at least 10 cm from the floor.

Prevention of break-ins and thefts

  • Home should be built tough, with at least a 44 mm thick door and proper locks.
  • The key to home may not be kept in typical hiding places, such as under the doormat, since these are the first places where thieves have a look.
  • If you have lost your key or are not sure whether you have come into possession of all of the copies of the keys after purchasing an apartment or house, you should change the door locks as soon as possible
When leaving home, be sure to properly close all doors and windows.
  • Do not let strangers know when you are away from home (e.g. at work or on holiday).
  • When leaving home, make sure that it does not appear to be abandoned. While on holiday, ask a reliable person to regularly empty the postbox, mow the lawn, draw the curtains for the night, etc.
  • After using the household property located outside the building, bring it indoors or lock it up to prevent theft. Trampolines, garden furniture and BBQ must be stored indoors when the season is over.
